They are archives, and often hold a lot of great information.

I in fact think locking topics is even too much of an issue. why should old topic regardless, if it still can be relevant and can still have good opinions posted to it not remain opened? the whole policy with a one size fits all lets lock all the topics with no posts for a year is really rather unfortunate.

I kinda agree with it; kinda agree with Rachel.
I've just been on the site again more frequently after a big break and I so wanted to respond to a board topic which had been locked.

The community decided to lock topics because some users were too incompetent to refrain from posting to topics with no further relevance. For example, people were posting on boards suggesting names for peoples children that were born 4 years after that poster saw the topic. Or, people were dragging old boards full of drama back up in to the sunlight. For every good board revived, 5 to 10 bad boards got brought up to.
We've already got a bad enough problem with spam, users that post 10 topics a day, duplicate topics etc.
Allowing people to drag old boards back from the dead when ever they want would be a bad idea. Maybe petitioning a board gets unlocked again would work, though most major online communities lock boards after they haven't been posted in for 3 months to one year like this, for the same reasons we do.
